Heat-related issues may already be plaguing Apple’s new third-generation iPad.
According to tests conducted by Consumer Reports, the new third-generation iPad measured approximately 12 to 13 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the second-generation iPad.
Consumers have also reported unauthorized “shut-downs” of their devices in warmer climates but thus far, no official statement has been made on the subject.

This topic deserves real discussion. People want function and performance out of these little systems, but the norm is for them to have no fan or even vents. To make matters worse, many people (me and my family included) get these devices and immediately put an impact absorbing outer shell on them, adding a significant layer of thermal insulation.
Semiconductor device power is decreasing even as computing power is increasing, but it is not falling fast enough to save this form factor product from thermal problems. At the moment, when a tablet computer gets too hot, all the control that is possible is to reduce the power of teh components, and eventually to turn it off.
Would these devices be better if they were larger and included a fan of some sort?
