New Electric Car Includes Thermally Controlled Battery Pack

Under the hood of the Ford Focus Electric, unveiled at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a 100 kilowatt AC motor provides 181 lb.-ft of torque and can propel the Ford Focus Electric to a top speed of 84 mph. Power is provided by a 23 kilowatt-hour Lithium-ion battery pack, made by LG Chem Ltd., the same battery company responsible for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt’s 16 kilowatt-hour battery pack.

The battery pack is thermally controlled, providing both liquid cooling or heating when required to keep the batteries at optimal temperature.
